Lumia 521 Camera
On paper and in practice, if only in one category, this is where the high-enders of Windows Phone should absolutely decimate the 521. The phone features a 5MP camera that can record 720p video, and it goes without saying that Zeiss optics and PureView technology are absent. With an application like ProShot and some post-processing on my PC, the 920 is versatile enough to take near-DSLR-quality shots.
Of course, most people aren’t willing to do all that post-processing. While it’s nice to get extreme-quality shots with some work, what matters to most phone buyers is that the press of a button produces a clear, colorful picture. How does the 521 stack up?
The camera is not entirely junk, nor is it as mastered as any of Nokia’s top-end sensors and lenses. It’s aperture is an f/2.4, compared to the larger f/2.0 of the HTC 8X or Lumia 920, which gives the 521’s camera a larger depth of field, but causes less light to be absorbed in a shot. You still get all the functionality Windows Phone gives to the camera app, like adjustments to white balance and aspect ratio, but remember that you don’t have an LED to brighten up a scene or assist the autofocus.
You can see that difference in-depth of field in this miniature gnome shot; the 920 focuses on a small area of distance between it and the subject, while the 521 manages to capture more of the subject in focus. For a camera with no LED focus assist, that’s beneficial if the camera has trouble getting a precise focus lock on a subject. Note that the 920 takes the cake at the specific points (the bird, the right hand) where it focuses, but then actually has some difficulty with the exposure overall; the 521 both captures a greater area of the subject in focus and has a more even exposure.
The winner in this tricky lighting situation is much more obvious. The 920 has the advantage of a wider field of view, helping it capture more of the subject. However, I believe the most important factor in this shot was how both cameras interpreted the lighting; The Lumia 920 took the cake by compensating well for the bright, clouded sunlight outside, both in color levels and exposure, and shows a velvety-red Pontiac with a clear reflection. The 521 suffers by focusing on the nearer, dimmer, fluorescent lighting, which resulted in dull colors on the front of the car and a wash-out at the back simultaneously. At least the 521 gets points from acceptable clarity.
Software
I already mentioned how the RAM limitation may cause certain Windows Phone 8 apps to be incompatible with the Lumia 521, but there are also some interesting limitations to some of the Nokia apps. For example, the augmented reality view in Nokia’s HERE Maps app is not available, nor is City Lens and the augmented reality feature in the included Weather Channel app does not work.
Another feature that’s probably worth the cost of the phone is the Nokia Music app. You can download up to 4 custom radio mixes for listening to offline. Then when you get tired of those, you can delete them and download 4 more. It’s unlimited offline music! The catch is you can’t rewind any songs. You have to listen to the whole playlist, though you can skip about 6 per hour. Still, that’s free music with no data plan!
The only T-Mobile customization that’s really worth mentioning is the Wi-Fi calling feature. If you turn this on, you’ll be able to send and receive voice calls and text messages over any Wi-Fi network with enough bandwidth. You don’t need the cell towers outside at all to make calls. It’s a little unreliable though, so I would only turn this on when absolutely necessary.
Surprisingly, the Lumia 521 received Nokia’s “Amber” firmware update as well as the new Windows Phone 8 GDR2 update on 8/14/2013. These updates bring even more features and capabilities to the Lumia 521. It now includes Data Sense with the ability to see which apps are using what amount of data, a feature for mapping out nearby Wi-Fi access points, and the option to limit data usage when you’re near your quota. You also get an FM Radio tuner for listening to the radio when headphones are plugged in and the ability to set the default camera app.

We’ve already mentioned the 5 megapixel camera with no flash, and you would probably expect it to be pretty horrible. Actually, we’ve always found those little LED flashes often included on phones to be pretty horrible themselves. Not having a flash on this phone forces you to only take pictures in decent lighting conditions and if you pay more attention to existing light you can actually get some great pictures with this camera. Most of Nokia’s special camera apps are included as well. You’ve got Smart Cam, Panorama, Cinemagraph, and the Creative Studio for post processing.

The Nokia Lumia 521 scored 169.25 in WPBench, compared to 234.73 on Lumia 928 or 232.11 for the Lumia 925. The Lumia 521’s score seems a lot lower than other Windows Phones and you would expect that for the price, but in normal usage everything is still buttery smooth. If you put the device side by side with a more expensive Windows Phone, you’ll certainly notice that the Lumia 521 does not perform as well. The screen doesn’t move quite as fast as the PureMotion HD displays of higher-end Nokia phones of course. Still, it’s quite usable and pleasant.

In terms of battery life, the Lumia 521 does quite well with average use. It’s certainly enough for a day and the device doesn’t have any terribly power hungry features like a high resolution screen or image stabilization. The key thing here is that the Lumia 521 has a removable BL-5J battery which is pretty common in older Nokia phones. You can get another one for about $4 and swap it out whenever.
Performance
Screen
The 521’s screen is an in-plane switching LCD, measuring 4.0 inches across the diagonal, with 800 x 480 pixels. This stops well short of the higher-resolution display on the Lumia 925 (to be sold by T-Mobile later this summer), but it still manages to look decent considering this class of device. It’s bright and colorful, and all of the on-screen elements are easy to see and read. You can see individual pixels only if you hold it close to your eyes. The 521’s best feature is that it is readable outdoors under a bright, sunny sky.
Signal
The 521 did fairly well on T-Mobile’s HSPA+ network. It doesn’t support T-Mobile’s LTE 4G network. I carried it around New Jersey for the better part of a week and it never had any trouble connecting to T-Mobile’s voice and data networks. Calls always went through on the first attempt, and the device only dropped one call during my tests. Data speeds were slightly inconsistent, but fell in line with what I’ve seen from other T-Mobile HSPA+ devices tested in the same areas.
Sound
The quality of phone calls made with the 521 were good, just as I expected them to be. Not only were they free of background noise and interference, but the earpiece produces clear and loud sound. Those with whom I spoke through the Lumia 521 said I sounded somewhat distant, but otherwise okay. When used around the house, you can probably get away with setting the volume at the 50% mark. If you’re out walking a busy city street, set it all the way up and you’ll have no trouble hearing callers. The speakerphone offers equivalent call quality, but the volume isn’t quite as impressive. Setting it on a desk or table helps. You’ll need to stick to quieter rooms to use it. Ringers and alert tones were loud enough to get my attention, though I thought the vibrate alert could have been stronger.
Wrap-Up
The Nokia Lumia 521 is one of the best values available from T-Mobile USA at the moment. The 521 has a pleasing design and solid build quality. The hardware functions very well and surpasses most other Android smartphones I’ve seen in the same device class.
Calls sounded good, network speeds were decent, and battery life was average. The 5-megapixel camera takes usable photos, and the video camera produces results of which you won’t be ashamed to share. Toss in the solid selection of Nokia services, such as HERE, and Microsoft’s apps, such as SkyDrive, and you’re getting a lot for your money.
The Lumia 521 costs $149.99 up front, but that’s the price to own it outright. (You can get it for less up front with a payment plan.) It’s worth every penny.

The Overall Impression
After tinkering with the Nokia Lumia 521 for a few days we find it to be a well built, budget friendly, solid performing Windows Phone.
The Lumia 521 is a scaled back phone with no camera light, no NFC, no front-facing camera, 512MB of RAM and 8GB. Sacrifices likely to keep the Lumia 521 at a very amicable pricing point. Fortunately, we didn’t find any of this detrimental to the Lumia 521’s overall performance. The screen has a little pop, the camera is a good shooter, call quality won’t leave you asking «Can you hear me now?», and battery life is respectable.
The Lumia 521 is what it is. It’s not intended to compete with the Lumia 92x series but instead it offers a budget oriented option for those who want to save a little or just want to dip their big toe into the Windows Phone swimming pool. I can also see the Lumia 521 as a good option for the younger Windows Phone user who doesn’t need the larger sized alternatives. My teenage son actually found the compact size of the Lumia 521 a little more appealing than the larger Lumia 920.

If you’re looking for an entry-level smartphone and would like to explore an alternative to Android and the iPhone, the Nokia Lumia 521 is a great deal at $150. It offers the full Windows Phone experience in a compact and inexpensive piece of hardware.
Body
Nokia’s modern design language is unmistakable. The bulk of the company’s Lumia-branded smartphones use brightly colored polycarbonate to stand out from the me-too, black-on-black slabs that make up the bulk of the smartphone market. The Lumia 521 continues this trend.
Despite Nokia’s take on materials and color, the Lumia 521 is clearly the bottom rung in Nokia’s smartphone ladder. Its look is blunt compared to the refined look of higher-end devices, such as the Lumia 925. It looks like the entry-level smartphone that it is, but with slightly more panache than what we might see on a similar Android phone thanks to the white, wrap-around shell that forms the bulk of the 521’s shape. In fact, the shell forms the entire back and side surfaces; the 521’s guts sit within the shell. The contrasting flat black glass front gives the 521 a well-defined shape and appearance.
Body
The polycarbonate shell feels strong. The smooth contour that gently curves from one end to the other is comfortable against your skin. Unlike some of Nokia’s other white Lumia smartphones, the 521’s white shell has a matte finish. I much prefer the look and feel of the this finish. The compact nature of the size and the curved sides let the 521 fit snugly in your palm. The build quality of the device is good overall, and it will slip easily into pockets.
As with other Lumia designs, the 521’s screen is swimming in a huge bezel. The thick black borders make the screen look smaller than it really is. There are three capacitive buttons below the display that access the Windows Phone back, Start, and Bing functions. The buttons worked well and provided plenty of haptic feedback.
The rest of the buttons conform to Nokia norms and are all located on the right edge of the 521. The volume toggle, screen lock button, and dedicated camera button are all black and offer excellent profiles. Not only are they easy to find, but they have fantastic travel and feedback. I did, however, find myself accidentally turning the screen on/off when gripping the device thanks to the lock button’s positioning in the middle of the side edge. The standard stereo headphone jack is positioned on the top and the microUSB port is tucked into the bottom.
The battery is removable, but to get at it you have to first remove the outer shell. It’s a little bit of a pain, if you ask me. You have to use both hands and really dig your nails into the top seam to separate the two halves of the phone. The battery has to be removed in order to access the SIM card and microSD card slots.
The Lumia 521 may not have quite the good looks of some of Nokia’s other efforts, but it’s no threat to Nokia’s solid design DNA. Add in the solid functionality and you have a hardware design that feels a step above its price range.

Well, what we have here is, ahem, another Windows Phone 8 device. What else can we add? You get Windows Phone 8 as usual, with all the videos and lenses and apps you can fit onto what little storage is available; and you get Nokia’s suite of lenses, utilities, and exclusive apps (some of which you will have to grab from the Nokia Collection in the Store, such as Ringtone Maker). For those unaware, that includes HERE Drive (no free international turn-by-turn), Maps, and Transit; Cinemagraph, Panorama, and Smart Shoot; Nokia Music; Storage Check for analyzing and removing temporary files; and others.
T-Mobile also includes some pre-installed programs, ranging from typical spamware to actual, useful tools; while Data Sense is still a Verizon exclusive, T-Mobile gives you a My Account app that displays your data and minutes usage with a live tile, along with other features.
Unsurprisingly, there are some honest limitations. The first to interrupt my bliss was the lack of a compass; Nokia City Lens would not install on the 521 because of this. Likewise, any other applications that utilize a built-in compass will have compatibility issues with the 521. There is also the de-clocked Snapdragon S4 processor (1GHz, versus 1.5 in most high-end Windows Phone 8 devices) and 512MB RAM (versus 1GB), both of which can limit performance in a number of intensive tasks. Zinio, the latest addition to the Nokia app collection, requires 1GB of RAM, so the 521 won’t allow it to install.
For all the programs I have actually installed and ran, however, from Angry Birds to Baconit, you would’ve needed a timer running to figure out the winner between the 920 and the 521. Spotify took about 0.6 seconds longer to open on the 521 than the device with 50% higher clock speed and 100% more RAM. Sometimes, the 521 would even beat out the 920 to resuming an app like Pandora Radio. The 521 is also perfectly capable of playing high-end 3D games like Asphalt 7 thanks to the Adreno 305 GPU, which is a step below the Lumia 920’s 225 GPU. Baconit is one of the apps that brings out weakness in the 521, demonstrated by twice the loading times for subreddits versus the 920.

Итог
Как и раньше, Nokia делает достойное железо — здесь ничего не изменилось. Что касается операционной системы, то Windows Phone всё же на любителя. Как-то вот не получается у этой ОС стать действительно массовой в России. Возможно, причина в разработчиках, которые в конкурентоспособность этой ОС не очень-то верят: многие хорошие приложения выходят сначала для iOS и Android, а до Windows Phone если и добираются, то не скоро. Опять же, проблема с играми: их мало и их качество уступает конкурирующим платформам.

С другой стороны, если вы прохладно относитесь к играм на смартфоне, вас не очень-то интересуют новинки среди приложений, то смартфон на Windows Phone может стать для вас хорошим карманным помощником и качественным телефоном. А конкретно Nokia Lumia 1520 ещё и понравится любителям больших экранов.
