If only Niantic had a Time Turner
First and foremost, Wizards Unite seems to have come at the wrong time. It’s been three years since Pokémon Go took the world by storm, and a lot has changed since then.
In 2016, a location-based mobile game that has you walking around in the real world to interact with digital content was largely a novel idea. Niantic’s own Ingress was pretty much the only game that did this, but while it indeed developed a sizeable fanbase, this type of game was still mostly new to people.
A couple of years later and articles are rounding up some of the (many) shameless Pokémon Go clones. It’s not uncommon now to see a company take a notable property and give it the Pokémon Go treatment. Look no further than Universal and Montreal-based Ludia’s Jurassic World Alive or Sony and FourThirtyThree’s Ghostbusters World. Hell, even Garfield has his own Go game. Meanwhile, Pokémon Go itself has seen a massive resurgence in players starting last summer, even a couple years out from its debut.
All of that is to say this style of game just isn’t fresh or exciting anymore, no matter In fact, some have even argued that the game being much more complicated than Pokémon Go can be overwhelming, especially to the sort of gamer who’s just looking to mess around with a mobile game casually.
Looking back on it, Pokémon Go‘s somewhat maligned simplicity — especially during its infancy — may have actually worked in its favour.
Further, the entire premise of Pokémon — “travelling across the land” and “searching far and wide” to “catch ’em all” — lends itself so well to a location-based mobile game. Even people without a nostalgic connection to Pokémon can understand and appreciate Go‘s core selling point of walking through your neighbourhood and catching a Pikachu right outside your local coffee shop. In Wizards Unite, wandering around to capture all kinds of magical gizmos, creatures and even notable witches and wizards is admittedly odd and doesn’t have the same appeal.

Completing Your Collection
So far, the goal in Wizards Unite appears to be filling up your Registry, which is a list of all known Foundables (kind of like Pokémon Go’s Pokédex). Each Foundable belongs to a category, such as Magical Games and Sports, Care of Magical Creatures or Dark Arts, and each one has a different symbol. When you see one of these symbols on your overworld map, it takes you to a screen where you can address the issue at hand (similar to the Pokémon capture dynamic).
As you enter these scenarios, you’ll find each Foundable being held back by some different kind of barrier called a Confoudable. These range from sticky webs to flames or even nasty guardian troll, and they’ll all trying to prevent you from getting your hands on the Foundable. Every Confoundable has a Threat Level meter which basically indicates how difficult it will be to remove. While you can turn the AR camera off and just capture them on a generic background, it’s a delight to turn it on and see the scenes unfold within the real world. The animations are incredible-looking, and the AR almost makes it feel like it’s happening in front of you.

In the AR mode, to start the fight, you line up some stars on screen with the stars on the Confoundable. This allows you to place a spell by tracing a shape on the screen. Depending on how well you replicate that shape, you’ll perform a more effective spell. From there, you might overpower the Confoundable and return the Foundable to its proper place, or the magic can resist your spell and it’ll ask you to try again. Every time you do a spell, it uses up energy, so you have to make your decisions wisely. There are also times when they both retreat entirely, making you lose your shot at retrieving the Foundable.

Once you do retrieve one, its image gets added to your Registry like a sticker in a sticker book. However, some of the Foundables you’ll locate are just fragments, requiring you to find them multiple times before they’re properly retrieved and their images can be added. This means you’ll be doing a lot of running around to fill all of your pages.

Sometimes, you might even encounter a foe who fights back. When this happens, you’ll want to perform offensive spells as well as simple defensive ones to prevent yourself from getting hurt. Both you and your digital opponent have stamina, which essentially works as HP, and if yours gets to zero, you’re out. While I haven’t yet stumbled upon any enemies that wasn’t total pushovers, I imagine these fights will get much tougher later on in the game.
Character Customization
In Pokémon Go, you can create an avatar that looks like a general approximation of you and dress them up in little outfits. The avatar in Wizards Unite is just a generic robed figure. While it defaults a purple character, once you’ve picked your Hogwarts house, the robe will change to match your house colors.
However, you can take a profile photo of yourself with the app and apply all kinds of AR filters to give yourself a house scarf, or a witch’s hat, or even a beard. I’m not a selfie person, but I can imagine that others would go wild with this feature and have a ton of fun. There are also frames and color filters you can use to customize your profile photo.
Once you get to a certain level, you can also choose a profession for your character. I’m a magizoologist, focusing on caring for and training magical creatures from the wizarding world. In this section of the game, I can use scrolls to unlock different abilities for my character, similar to a skill tree in other games.
So far, a lot of the other customization options appear to be entirely cosmetic. You can design your own wand and pick its wood, core, flexibility and length. Down the line, I’d love to see for these choices to influence the game in some way. Better yet, I’d love to see some House Cup-style competitions between the houses, akin to the Team Mystic, Valor and Instinct rivalries in Pokémon Go. It would be wonderful to help Hufflepuff win something, for once.
Fortress battles

The Harry Potter game also has more activities for hardcore gamers with Wizarding Challenges, which resemble the raids in Pokémon Go. With those synchronous multiplayer activities, players can team up and attack fortresses on the map. That gives players leveling-up experiences similar to role-playing games, with things like shared arenas, combat encounters, and group-wide arena effects.
I’ve done a couple of these battles with my kid. You have to make sure you drink enough potion to be able to stay in the fight long enough to beat all of the enemies.
Adding to the RPG gameplay, players can specialize in different professions: Auror, Magizoologist, and Professor. Players from different professions will be encouraged to work together to defeat Wizarding Challenges and unlock rare content.
And then, the game has treats for fans of the Harry Potter world in the form of Portkeys. Upon discovering and activating a Portkey Portmanteau, players will be able to reveal an immersive VR-like experience and transport themselves to explore iconic Wizarding World locations. In my preview, I saw one such place in the form of Ollivanders Wand Shop in the Diagon Alley area. This shop looked beautiful, and it is unlike anything you can do in Pokémon Go.
If you visit greenhouses scattered throughout the world, you’ll be able to collect different kinds of ingredients. With those, you can craft potions. The kind of ingredients available will depend on your biomes, with ingredients available changing based on weather conditions.
I’ve only gone out for a single walk with my kid so far, and it was too cold to hang out. We found we had to spend a lot more time standing around a given spot, because of the AR combat. Some people who want to walk more than they want to play might turn off the AR.
But that would be a shame, as AR adds more life to the game.

Early Hiccups
When Pokémon Go first released in 2016, lots of people couldn’t even log in because the servers were so overloaded with eager fans. While Wizards Unite doesn’t appear to have this same issue, the first day has been pretty slow and buggy at times. Maybe my connection is bad, but clicking on simple collectibles sometimes freezes the game for five seconds or more as it registers my actions. Other times, I got stuck on certain screens because I had to progress through dialogue before I could take action, but it simply wasn’t appearing.
Altogether, I played it for about 90 minutes, and at least half a dozen times I just shut the app off and reopened it because I wasn’t sure if it was ever going to load. There were other times where the next screen did finally load, but it was only after more than two minutes of waiting. While I do think that these issues will get nailed down eventually, if you’re going to be an early adopter, you may want to get used to looking at this loading screen.

The title is built on the same mapping technology behind Pokémon Go, which puts an animated overlay on the real world map. You can walk to different points on the map to discover creatures and magical items in the real world. You can find animated objects or creatures and interact with them, including walking around 3D animations of locations from the worlds of Harry Potter and Fantastic Beasts.
In Harry Potter: Wizards Unite, players are new recruits of the Statute of Secrecy Task Force working to solve the mystery of the Calamity. Because of this event, the secrets of the Wizarding World are at risk of being exposed to ordinary people (muggles). Players unite to fight the threat. They will be able to explore their neighborhoods and cities to discover mysterious artifacts, cast spells, and encounter fantastic beasts and iconic characters along the way.
The game takes place after the events of the Deathly Hallows, the final Harry Potter book. All wizards and witches have to unite to fight the threat. Mary Casey, executive director of product at WB Games San Francisco, said that in the game, a law was passed in 1692 that created a Statute of Secrecy, which sought to keep the Wizarding World secret from muggles. The developers didn’t mention it, but that so happens to be the year of the Salem witch trials.
But a Calamity has occurred, threatening the sacred law and creating the risk of items known as “foundables” appearing all over the place. These are artifacts like wizards, beasts, and items that have been scattered throughout the mobile world. They are shrouded in a type of magic known as “confoundable magic,” but it’s not clear how long that shroud will last and the objects will remain hidden.
The British Ministry of Magic has called the wizards together to explore their neighborhoods, find the foundables, overcome the confoundable magic, and return the items to their rightful place. If you travel, you’ll find different creatures in different places.
The game kicks off with a call to arms to join the Statute of Secrecy Task Force and scour the world for the items. The game is built around a story with a multiyear narrative arc that will have players solving various mysteries, including the truth behind the Calamity.
Like Pokémon Go, Wizards Unite is a free-to-play game with in-app purchases.

Yer a disappointment, Harry
There’s also the subject of franchise popularity. While there’s a bit of an ongoing debate about whether the Pokémon games require reinvention, that doesn’t change the fact that the monster-catching franchise as a whole is still insanely popular. Even around the time that Pokémon Go came out, fans were also buzzing about Sun and Moon, two upcoming Nintendo 3DS entries in the franchise that promised significant changes to the series’ tried-and-true formula.
On the other hand, while no one can say that Harry Potter isn’t a big deal, it’s safe to say that current interest in the franchise has arguably waned immensely in recent years.
To start, the first new Harry Potter-starring story in years, The Cursed Child play, was widely regarded as poorly written fanfiction, while the two Fantastic Beasts prequel films — particularly last year’s Crimes of Grindelwald — have received mixed to poor reviews and failed to make much of a splash at the box office. That’s to say nothing of Harry Potter creator J.K. Rowling’s nonsensical retcons, flat out pointless additions to the lore and controversial approach to representation.
With all of that said, I would argue that a lot of people have somewhat soured on Harry Potter — for now, anyway. I know I have. Therefore, there likely wasn’t much of an appetite for something like Wizards Unite at this point in time, even when, by most accounts, the game is a fine take on the Harry Potter brand.
Pacing
So far, Wizards United is an awesome step into the wizarding world for Harry Potter fans, but it has a much slower pace than Pokémon Go and probably won’t enthrall those who aren’t in love with the series. The more manual process of collecting Foundables, which requires accurate tracing, makes it more stop-and-go than Pokémon Go, which as the name implies is super easy to play when you’re quickly moving from one place to the next. Things can take a while to load, Foundables animations are elaborate and lengthy, and every level up takes time.

The items (and people and ideas) in the Registry can also feel a bit arbitrary at times, and so far I haven’t found filling to be as satisfying or fun as capturing new Pokémon in Pokémon Go. If you adore the series, you might feel differently, but I fully intend to return to Pokémon Go tomorrow when I head out on my daily walk.

Why are we collecting magic stuff?
Pokémon’s «catch-em-all» branding was a natural fit for the real-world search-and-find gameplay of Pokémon Go. Making the same premise work in the magical world of Harry Potter is a bit more difficult. So in Wizards Unite, now there’s an overarching story about a mysterious wizard who cast a «Calamity» spell that has captured a bunch of «Foundable» magical objects and people behind a series of «Confoundable» traps. The wizarding world (i.e. you and your friends) have to join together and scour the map to find and rescue these foundables in order to maintain the Statute of Secrecy that keeps witches and wizards hidden from muggles.

“Aren’t you a little too old for that?” Two decades of playing Pokémon
That plot is a bit convoluted maybe, but it’s fine enough to set up the walk-around-and-collect-stuff gameplay. But then you almost immediately find Rubeus Hagrid—yes, the Rubeus Hagrid—trapped in some sort of immense spider web. A bit later, you might find Professor Snape captured in a large bottle or one of a series of interchangeable Hogwarts students. These well-known humans (who can be found and saved multiple times from the same fate, somehow) are mixed in with random magical creatures and artifacts ranging from a Hippogriff to assorted Quidditch equipment.
When you rescue enough copies of a distinct foundable (by tracing a simple shape on the touch screen as quickly and accurately as possible), you can put its picture in a massive registry of images that acts as Wizards Unite’s version of a Pokédex. Perhaps there are some Harry Potter superfans out there who will be thrilled to finally find that last «Azkaban Wanted Poster» to fill up their Dark Arts sticker page. Personally, though, collecting such a random and disorganized assortment of Harry Potter ephemera has felt a little bit directionless so far.
To Wizards Unite’s credit, each individual foundable is rendered with its own lovingly detailed 3D models and animations, complete with relevant and often unique spells you need to cast to free them from inventive confoundables. But the «realistic» style of these low-polygon models achieves a sort of uncanny valley effect that wasn’t present in the brighter, more cartoon-infused Pokémon Go. And the «unique» animations start to feel a little less so after you see one for the third time in as many minutes, for instance.
The animations and «rewards» interface also runs quite a bit slower than the zippier process of Pokémon-collecting, which in turn slows down the quick find-and-catch tempo of Niantic’s previous game. Wizards Unite’s complex animations and character models can often lead to long load times the first time you see a new foundable or object (you can get around this by pre-loading all the game content from a menu, but that requires a massive 3.3GB download to your mobile device).
Wizards Unite also seems to be trying to lay the lore on thick, with a lot of text-based discussions involving Harry Potter himself. A lot of these provide cute (if pointless) backstory—such as the source of the «foundables» name—but some seem to be hinting at a grander, overarching mystery plot surrounding who cast the Calamity spell in the first place. It’s a nice nod to added depth, but you might feel compelled to skip through it quickly as you proceed on your walking search for ever more collectibles.

Вполне возможен выпуск специального аксессуара по типу браслета Pokemon GO Plus. Наличие волшебной палочки, которая работает по bluetooth и позволяет изучать заклинания и сражаться с друзьями без активного использования смартфона было бы очень кстати.
Дуэли
Система магических дуэлей несомненно будет присутствовать в Wizards Unite – иначе никак! Эта механика позволит поддерживать конкурентный дух в игре, а наличие дуэльных клубов может являться реинкарнацией системы гимов, которая присутствует в Pokemon GO (естественно, в улучшенном и переработанном виде).

Вселенная Гарри Поттера как никакая другая подходит для того, чтобы воссоздать ее в дополненной реальности. Вы сможете использовать свой смартфон, чтобы увидеть скрытые входы в иные миры, превратить совершенно обычные и приевшиеся вам места в волшебные локации – несомненно, все эти возможности побудят вас исследовать мир вокруг вас.

Почему проходить Harry Potter: Wizards Unite я не планирую
В игре можно застрять, прямо как Хагрид из самого её старта
Если честно, нет времени, а игра его требует.
В ней нет конкретной цели. Это магический мир с элементами дополненной реальности, в котором нужно практически жить.
С каждым днём вы будете находить новые предметы, становиться всё сильнее и сильнее, пробовать заклинания и заводить новых друзей. И всем этим можно заниматься реально годами.
Параллельно тут можно ещё и донатить, чтобы добыть что-то быстрее других. Например, на каждое заклинание тратиться энергия. Пополнить её можно как с помощью ожидания, так и за реальные деньги.

Of course, Wizards Unite is by no means an abject failure, and given that we’re not even a month out from release, there is certainly plenty of time to draw in more players.
As mentioned, Niantic has consistently managed to retain Pokémon Go players and even bring back many at a given time, so it’s possible it could do the same with Wizards Unite. Niantic hit that summer 2018 milestone a few months before it added the long-requested PvP mode, which no doubt won over even more people.
Listening to feedback from the Wizards Unite community and tweaking the game accordingly could certainly help. I won’t claim to speak for the recurring players and argue for what could be done to draw in a larger audience, so I’ll leave that to the folks at Niantic to figure out.
Ultimately, it’s clear that the developer has a lot working against it with Wizards Unite, so I’m very much interested in seeing what sort of magic trick they might pull with the game.

Как и в Pokemon Go, практически вся активность в ней происходит на свежем воздухе. И от одного объекта на карте к другому нужно перемещаться по реальному миру, а не виртуальному.
В отличие от предыдущей игры, объекты в этой привязаны не к природным условиям заданной местности, а к конкретным зданиям, памятникам, мемориальным доскам и другим «достопримечательностям».
Скорее всего, школьникам, а именно они целевая аудитория, с помощью игры пытаются показать именно то, чего они раньше не видели — те же мемориальные доски памяти известным людям.
Процесс зельеварения и сбора реликвий
Когда игра у нас заработала, я тут же прыгнул в тачку и поехал изучать объекты, которые разбросаны по карте.
Она сразу предупредила меня, что за рулём проходить её точно нельзя. Я нажал, что сижу на месте пассажира, и полетел.
Обнаружил на карте несколько разных объектов: в каких-то можно пополнить запас магических сил, в других сразиться с остальными волшебниками, а в третьих просто побиться с чем-то или кем-то магическим.
Кстати, точек последнего типа на карте очень много.
Я в шапке и сундуки, которые я пытаюсь открыть
Оказывается, во вселенной этой игры произошла катастрофа. В мир маглов попали магические предметы и существа. Вас берут одним из добровольцев, чтобы убрать их отсюда — эти события происходят уже после фильмов про «Гарри Поттера».
Когда будете разбираться с этим, сможете повышать уровни, варить зелья и делать всё то, о чем рассказывают фильмы.
Любопытно, что для многих задач в игре, нужно активно двигаться. Например, я находил сундуки, чтобы открыть которые, нужно пройти 2–5 километров.
Игра мотивирует ходить, и это актуально для детей, которые сегодня больше привыкли сидеть на месте.
Вместо вывода: что про игру сегодня думают в мире
️ В Game Informer игру ругают за большое количество встроенных покупок.
Особенно плохо это, учитывая, что в ней будут больше всего времени проводить именно дети.
️ В The Verge же говорят, что в игре очень сложно разобраться. Слишком много возможностей и не вполне понятно, зачем они все нужны.
Всё слишком сложно и запутанно.
️ В Polygon называют игру следующим шагом индустрии.
В издании подчёркивают, что даже мир вокруг влияет на действие в игре: например, оборотни в ней появляются только в полнолуние.
А вот для меня следующим шагом в развитии игр станет Apple Arcade с премиальными проектами без встроенных покупок и бесполезно проведённого времени. Надеюсь, сервис не подведёт.
