In the past, if you had a cable TV subscription to HBO, you could also use the HBO Go app, a freebie streaming option that came as a bonus. Plug in your cable TV login details, and you got access to a vast library of HBO content on-demand. It cost nothing extra, and worked on everything from your smartphone to your Apple TV/Roku/etc. to your computer.

On July 31, the HBO Go app was removed from most connected devices. Thankfully, AT&T has brokered deals that give most HBO cable subscribers access to HBO Max instead. If you subscribe to HBO through any of the cable providers below, you can get access to HBO Max at no extra cost. Simply go to the HBO Max website and choose your provider to login.

HBO Max is the same price as HBO Now, an older streaming service that features HBO original shows and the cable channel’s rotating package of movies. HBO Max currently offers all of HBO Now’s content plus a ton of new stuff from a variety of WarnerMedia brands — all for the same $14.99 a month price.

Most HBO Now subscribers can watch HBO Max with their HBO Now account at no extra cost. In other words, HBO Max is basically an automatic upgrade to HBO Now. With that in mind, the HBO Now app has been rebranded to just «HBO».

Since HBO Max offers a larger streaming library than HBO (formerly HBO Now), it’s clearly the better choice for subscribers. With that said, the HBO Max app is currently missing from a few notable devices, including Roku and Fire TV products. If you use one of those devices as your primary streaming player, the HBO app is currently your only option.

Checking the pricing

With a flat rate of $15 per month, HBO Now offers a single package, implying that you would not need a cable subscription for the viewership. On the other hand, HBO Go is free with a subscription, but it is the only way for viewers to access it. You must have HBO through a cable subscription to enjoy watching HBO Go.

However, few providers offer access to HBO to those customers with an internet connection so that the viewers can enjoy watching the content online. Even then, most users still watch HBO Go through a cable subscription, and the monthly rate can vary according to the plan and package they avail. Often, special offers allow the customers to reduce the price of the package. The HBO subscription can drop down to about $5 every month, although you have to pay more for the package than what you are paying for the cable.

If you pay for HBO already via your cable, satellite or cord-cutter live TV subscription, you can use the HBO Go app to stream those shows on other devices like your phone, tablet or another TV.

The good news is that, for millions of current HBO subscribers, the upgrade to Max happened automatically. HBO Now users who pay via HBO Now, Google or Apple get an app update that transforms the HBO Now app into the HBO Max app. HBO Go users from a number of TV providers (including Verizon, Comcast, Altice, Charter, YouTube TV and AT&T’s own TV services) are able to use the same username and password to log in to the new HBO Max app.

If you’re one of those millions of subscribers, you should be able to access Max without having to change anything with your HBO subscription.

I already have a version of HBO. How do I get HBO Max?

If you previously used the HBO Now or HBO Go app to stream HBO through an Apple TV or Google device, select Samsung smart TVs, or on your phone, your HBO Now app transformed into an HBO Max app on May 27. (Make sure you have automatic updates turned on, or look for an update to the app.) Similarly, if you get HBO via Apple TV channels, Hulu, Charter, or YouTube TV, you’ve been seeing HBO Max content show up on your user interface since May. If you get HBO through AT&T TV, DirecTV, AT&T U-Verse, Spectrum, Altice, Suddenlink, Optimum, Cox Contour, Verizon Fios TV, or some smaller cable/broadband companies, you should also be able to use your login credentials from those companies for Max (after downloading the app).

Until late last week, if you used an Amazon Fire TV device or got HBO through Amazon channels, you could still get HBO shows but were unable to get HBO Max. But the two companies have worked out their differences, and as of Nov. 17, Amazonians can now download the HBO Max app and start streaming away using their current HBO or Amazon Channels logins.

If you do your streaming via Roku or a Roku-branded TV, however, you are still out of luck. As of mid-November, the two companies still were at loggerheads over a deal to bring the service to the Roku platform. (Check here regularly to see if the two sides make peace.) However, there is a way to get around this mess if you’re really determined: Thanks to a software update, Roku devices made within the last few years are now able to play content cast via Apple AirPlay, which means you can download the HBO Max app to your phone or tablet and then cast it to your Roku. (I tried it; it works well!) If you’re using a Google device, you can also cast your screen to most recent Roku devices, too.

Ridley Scott directs and acts as executive producer of Raised by Wolves, a sci-fi series about androids raising human children on a new planet. Insecure star Issa Rae produces Rap Sh*t, a half-hour comedy about a female rap group’s adventures and misadventures of trying to succeed in the music industry. The Mindy Project’s Mindy Kaling is the creative force behind College Girls. The comedy series follows three college freshman roommates who are described as «lovable» and «infuriating.»

In addition to his four movies, Greg Berlanti has a few series planned for HBO Max, including Strange Adventures. Strange Adventures is a DC Superhero anthology series that features human and superhuman characters from DC comics. It’s described as an «one-hour drama series that explores close-ended morality tales about the intersecting lives of mortals and superhumans.»

HBO Max costs subscribers $14.99 a month, the same as HBO Now. Select HBO Now subscribers receive HBO Max free for a year. HBO Max has intriguing exclusive content, and also with HBO’s reputation for quality programming, the exclusive movies and series on HBO Max may end up receiving award season recognition and buzz. The fear of missing out might be too much for some TV lovers. Плюсы и минусы SharePlay в её текущем виде

С технической точки зрения к фишке не подкопаться, все работает четко, гладко и стабильно. Синхронизация воспроизводимого контента достаточно точная, никаких задержек при воспроизведении у вас и собеседников не будет.

А вот к удобству и целесообразности некоторых опций возникают вопросы.

Во-первых, активация и управление SharePlay не выглядят интуитивно. Купертиновцы сделали все возможное, чтобы сделать интерфейс простым, но одновременный звонок по FaceTime с режимом работы “картинка в картинке” и параллельный запуск других приложений на небольшом экране смартфона априори не может быть удобным процессом. Чтобы понять, куда и в какой последовательности нужно нажимать, запомнить, что именно видят другие пользователи в текущий момент, придется воспользоваться фичей минимум с десяток раз.

Придумать несколько сценариев работы SharePlay для себя я еще смогу, но точно не представляю, как совместное потребление контента будут использовать возрастные родители или их ровесники. Мне кажется, что реализовать возможность SharePlay нужно было на базе конечных приложений, которые бы при активации фишки предлагали созвониться с пользователями FaceTime, а не наоборот.

Во-вторых, при использовании SharePlay не поддерживается большинство гарнитур и внешних колонок. Сторонние аксессуары просто не будут работать с iPhone или iPad в режиме шаринга и звук начнет воспроизводиться через динамик устройства. Это не всегда удобно.

В-третьих, некоторые режимы работы SharePlay сложно реализовать в реальности. Например, это касается совместных спортивных занятий. Мало того, что к каждому участнику выдвигается солидный набор требований (наличие гаджетов, последние версии ос, подписка), так еще и подобрать удобное время занятий без возможности перемотки роликов крайне сложно.

Без локализации придется все время смотреть на экран для чтения субтитров, как при этом еще поглядывать на друзей и переговариваться с ними – непонятно.

Другим примером неудачного применения фичи является опция с играми по SharePlay. Подобных приложений крайне мало, для начала совместной сессии придется искать приложение, ждать, пока его установят остальные участники беседы, создавать аккаунты внутри приложения (если это потребуется), а потом играть в банальные семейные аркады.

Гораздо проще сыграть с друзьями в любую интересную игру с поддержкой сетевого режима, а при необходимости можно параллельно созвониться в любом доступном мессенджере.

Действительно полезными, на мой взгляд, выглядят возможности демонстрации экрана и совместного просмотра видео-контента. Я бы с удовольствием смотрел футбольные трансляции через SharePlay с друзьями.

What Is HBO Max?

HBO Max is also a streaming platform for HBO movies and series—a consolidation of HBO Now and HBO Go. But rather than only featuring HBO content, it also offers content from across WarnerMedia’s catalog. The platform also hosts original content specific to HBO Max called Max Originals.

The service includes all of HBO’s catalog, as well as titles from other WarnerMedia networks and franchises. This includes content from DC, CNN, TNT, TBS, truTV, Cartoon Network, Adult Swim, Crunchyroll, Rooster Teeth, Looney Tunes Cartoons, and select TCM classic films.

As for the cost of HBO Max, you can expect to pay $9.99/month with ads, or $14.99/month for ad-free streaming (excluding tax) if purchased directly from HBO Max. However, WarnerMedia states that if you buy it as part of a package or from another provider, prices may vary.

For example, if you purchase HBO Max access via Hulu, YouTube TV, or your cable provider, prices may differ. AT&T and other internet providers also include access to HBO Max as a part of certain packages.

Is there a way to get HBO Max for free if I currently don’t have HBO?

Yes — if you’re an AT&T video, broadband, or cell phone customer (including DirecTV and AT&T TV). The company has already been offering free HBO to many of its customers, so you may already be getting HBO for free. Check your bill! But with the launch of Max, AT&T is expanding which customers get free access. In some cases, the free access is permanent; in others, it’s good for a year or three months. AT&T put out a full list of which customers are eligible for which freebies here. If you’re not eligible via one of these plans, give your AT&T provider a call anyway and ask if you can get free HBO Max. The entire company will be trying to sign up new Max customers these next few months, so there’s a good chance someone will give you a deal.

How Do the HBO Streaming Services Differ?

With these three streaming services, it basically comes down to how you want to get HBO and what you’d like to watch. HBO Go is included with a traditional HBO subscription through a TV or mobile provider, while HBO Now is a stand-alone streaming service. The cost of HBO through a TV or mobile provider varies, but HBO Now is $14.99 per month. In both cases, you can only access HBO’s catalog — nothing extra.

HBO Max seems to be the best deal: for $14.99 per month, you receive access to all of HBO’s catalog, plus TV series and movies from DC and Warner Bros. Additionally, Max also provides access to Max Originals, such as The Not-Too-Late Show with Elmo and Love Life, which stars Anna Kendrick. Eventually, you can expect HBO Now and HBO Go to go away, though the latter for a while yet.

For kids, there’s classic and recent episodes of Sesame Street, programming from Cartoon Network and new Looney Tunes cartoons. HBO Max is also making its own original shows, starting off with the Anna Kendrick rom-com Love Life and a reality competition devoted to voguing dubbed Legendary. Expect 30 or more Max originals by the end of 2020.

Simply put, HBO Go is the streaming companion to your regular old HBO cable subscription package. So, if you’re already paying for HBO through your cable provider, this is the streaming channel you’ll want to download onto your Amazon Fire Stick, Roku or Apple TV. You’ll log in with your cable provider’s credentials to access all of the content you’d ordinarily get on the TV.

Meanwhile, HBO Now is the standalone streaming service for those not paying for HBO through a cable provider, and it costs $15 per month. Both options cost money in some way, but HBO Now captures new customers, while HBO Go provides more viewing options to existing ones.
